The DOT Blood Pressure Stages: What Do My Blood Pressure Numbers Mean?

dot physical phoenix

Urine Luck we can help you with that! Think of it like a traffic light for your health. The doc is looking at two numbers: the top one (Heart working / systolic) and the bottom one (heart resting / diastolic).

Green Light: Good to Go (2-Year Card)

  • Reading: Below 140/90
  • The Deal: Perfect. You pass with flying colors and get your full 2-year med card. The doc sends you on your way, and you don’t have to worry about your blood pressure for a long time.

Yellow Light: The “Heads Up” (1-Year Card)

  • Reading: Between 140/90 and 159/99 (This is what they call Stage 1 hypertension)
  • The Deal: You’re still good to drive, but this is a warning. The doc will give you a 1-year med card. They’re basically saying, “Hey, let’s keep an eye on this.” It’s a good time to start thinking about cutting back on the salty truck stop food and maybe walking a few extra laps around the trailer.

Orange Light: “Time to See a Doc” (3-Month Card)

  • Reading: Between 160/100 and 179/109 (Stage 2)
  • The Deal: This is where it gets serious. You can get a temporary 3-month med card, but only if you get on medication and bring your pressure down below 140/90. After those three months, you have to get re-checked. If you’ve got it under control, you’ll then get a 1-year card from that date. If not, you’re disqualified until you do. They don’t play around with these numbers.

Red Light: You’re Parked (Disqualified)

  • Reading: 180/110 or higher (Stage 3)
  • The Deal: This is a full stop. You are medically disqualified. You cannot drive until you get your blood pressure treated and lowered to 140/90 or less. It’s a major safety risk, and they won’t let you on the road.

Tips for Driver

Look, nobody likes being told what to do, but this is one of those things that can end your career or worse. It’s not just about the regulations; it’s about making sure you get home safe to your family after a long haul.

  • “White Coat Syndrome” is Real: If you get nervous at the doc’s office (who doesn’t?), your pressure can spike. Take a few deep breaths before they put the cuff on. Ask them to wait a few minutes and take it again if the first reading is high.
  • Watch the Salt: That truck stop food is tasty , but it’s loaded with salt. Try grabbing a salad or some grilled chicken instead of the fried stuff a few times a week. Every little bit helps.
  • Hydrate with Water: Coffee, energy drinks and soda will dehydrate you and can mess with your BP. Try to drink more plain old water.
  • Move Around: When you finally shut down to get your 10, don’t just climb into the bunk. Do a few laps around the truck stop. It gets the blood moving.
  • Pro Tip: Go buy yourself an automatic blood pressure cuff. Make sure it’s an arm cuff, not the wrist kind—you want the most accurate readings possible. Start checking your BP at home when you’re relaxed, like when you’re just watching TV. Log the numbers. If you start seeing readings that are consistently creeping above that 140/90 magic number, don’t freak out. That’s not a failure; it’s just your signal to loop in your primary care physician. It’s way better to tackle it on your own terms now.

This job is stressful enough without having to worry about blowing a gasket—literally. Keeping an eye on your BP numbers is just another part of being a professional. Stay safe out there.
