Discretionary standards are when the medical examiner makes a clinical judgment about your health which is in line with the FMSCA certification requirements. Examples of conditions that are discretionary are:

• Hypertension
• Heart Conditions
• Respiratory Conditions
• Diabetes
• High Blood Pressure
• Loss Of An Appendage (Leg, Arm, Foot, Or Hand)
• Inner-Ear Disorders That Cause Vertigo Or Other Balance Issues
• Sleep Disorders
• Nervous Disorders
• Psychiatric Disorders
• Proteinuria (Excessive Protein In The Urine, Which May Indicate Kidney Disease)
• Vision

These conditions are assessed according to the medical examiner’s discretion. Based on your current state and the examiner’s understanding of the scenario, they may be able to grant a temporary certification, even if you have a DOT-disqualifying medical condition. This allows them to monitor the condition and necessitates reassessment and recertification within a shorter timeframe.
