Can You Keep Your CDL After Getting an Elective Heart Stent?

Urine Luck, we can help you with that!

Alright driver, let’s talk about the ticker. You’ve had a stent put in, and the big question is: How soon can you get back to turning wheels?

I’ll shoot you straight—no bull, just the facts. I know you need to be rolling to be earning.

First off, you know as well as I do that the DOT gets nervous about heart stuff. When you’ve had a stent also known as a PCI, the FMCSA gets real involved in your business. We have to play by their rules strictly. It ain’t just about whether you feel up to climbing into the cab; it’s about being legal to operate that 80,000-pound rig safely.

The timeline for getting back in the seat depends entirely on why your chassis needed work in the first place. 🤔

Scenario A: The Tune-Up (Elective) 🛠️

If you went into the shop for a scheduled, “elective” procedure just to fix some stable chest pain (angina) and there were no complications, you might be hammering down sooner than you think.

Some drivers get cleared in as little as one week. 📅

But hold your horses. 🐴 This isn’t a decision you make yourself. You absolutely need your cardiologist to green-light you. ✅ If they don’t sign off that you’re fit to drive, you’re still parked.

The "PCI" (Stent) Checklist 🩺

If you just went in for a tune-up (elective stent) and didn’t have a heart attack, you could be back in one week

  • The 1-Week Rule: You can return as soon as 1 week post-procedure if the cut in your leg/arm (access site) is healed and your cardiologist says you’re good. ✅
  • The Clearance Letter: Same deal—cardiologist needs to sign off that you’re tolerating meds and have no angina (chest pain). 📝
  • The Stress Test (The Kicker): Here is where guys get tripped up. 🚧
    • You might not need the stress test day one to get back in the truck if it was just a stent. BUT…
    • The FMCSA requires you to get an Exercise Tolerance Test (ETT) 3 to 6 months after the procedure.
    • So, if you get back on the road in week 2, make sure you schedule that stress test before month 6 rolls around, or your medical card turns into a pumpkin. 🎃
  • The Recert: you are on a 1-year lease now. Annual physicals, and a stress test every 2 years (if your cardiologist requires it). 🗓️

Pro Tip: Don’t walk into the certified medical examiners office empty-handed. Bring the actual test results (the EKG printout, the Echo report) and the doctor’s letter.

If you need a specific medical clearance letter for stents to give to your doctor, reach out to our office.
